Epidemiology and Prevention

Epidemiology and preventive medicine are regarded as key topics within the curricula of most medical and dental schools but, paradoxically, often receive less attention in the busy schedule of student life and the competing pressures of pre-clinical and clinical topics. In our Medical School we teach a systems course to the first and second year students, and our book is based on this, with additional chapters to provide a sound introduction to the principles of epidemiological investigation and practice. The genesis of this book came from the desire to highlight the importance of preventive medicine for undergraduates and the practical need to provide a suitable text book for a systems-based course. We believe this is the first text book to describe epidemiological tools and methods together with chapters which review the epidemiology of major diseases of clinical and public health importance.

We hope that all students will find the book clear and comprehensive, and that it will also provide an introduction to the more statistical aspects of epidemiology. We also hope that all students will find the topics useful to their chosen career and that more students will be encouraged to pursue careers in preventive medicine and public health practice.
